Each province and territory has its own rules on registering a death, coroners, probate and wills; the notes for each province and territory are drawn from official sources and say when they were checked. What the law says in Saskatchewan
Registering the death
Every death in Saskatchewan must be registered with Vital Statistics. An adult relative completes a statement for the funeral director, who submits it, and a physician (or a coroner, where the death is reportable) completes the medical certificate. Give the funeral director the statement as soon as you can. The Vital Statistics Act, 2009, S.S. 2009, c. V-7.21, ss. 34–36, 42
Coroner or medical examiner
Where the death is one that must be reported to a coroner, the coroner completes the medical certificate. If an autopsy is pending, an interim certificate can be issued so that a burial permit can still be obtained. We found no published rule on religious objections, so tell the coroner or the doctor at the first contact if you have one. The Vital Statistics Act, 2009, S.S. 2009, c. V-7.21, ss. 34–36, 42
Release and burial permit
The burial permit is issued once the statement and the medical certificate are in. The funeral director gets it and gives a copy to the person leading the funeral or religious service and to the cemetery. Ask the funeral director to confirm that the permit is in hand before the burial. The Vital Statistics Act, 2009, S.S. 2009, c. V-7.21, ss. 34–36, 42
Probate and the estate
Letters probate (with a will) or letters of administration (without) are applied for through the Court of King’s Bench, and the Public Guardian and Trustee is the province’s official administrator. Start with the province’s estate guide and the court’s forms. Administering the Estate of Someone Who’s Died (saskatchewan.ca)
Benefits
Service Canada pays a one-time Canada Pension Plan death benefit if the person contributed enough; the executor or administrator applies if there is an estate. Ask the executor to apply through Service Canada once the death certificate is issued. Canada Pension Plan death benefit (canada.ca)

The steps

  1. Have the death pronounced

In the first hour · 0 of 4

A death has to be confirmed before anything else can happen.

  2. Close the eyes, cover the body, make duʿā

In the first hour · at the same time as the step above · 0 of 4

Gently and without hurry. Those present can do this while the calls are made.

  3. Call the masjid’s funeral committee

In the first few hours · 0 of 3

They arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and usually know which funeral home to use.

  4. Ask whether a coroner or medical examiner is involvedPaperwork

If the death was sudden · 0 of 3

After a sudden, unexplained or violent death, a coroner (in some provinces a medical examiner) investigates and may order an autopsy, which can delay burial.

  5. Choose a funeral home that allows ghuslPaperwork

Within the first day · 0 of 4

Most families use a funeral home, or a masjid’s own licensed funeral service. Your committee will usually name one.

  6. Register the death and get the burial permitPaperwork

Within the first days · at the same time as the step above · 0 of 3

A doctor, nurse practitioner or coroner certifies the cause of death. The funeral home and a family member give the personal details, and the death is registered with Saskatchewan. Burial needs a permit.

Done by trained Muslims of the same sex, or by the spouse. The committee usually provides the cloth.

  9. Get copies of the death certificatePaperwork

In the first week · 0 of 3

Banks, insurers and government offices will each want proof of death. A certificate can only be issued once the death is registered.

  10. Pay the funeral costs and list every debt

In the first weeks · 0 of 3

The funeral is paid from the estate first, then the debts. Nothing is inherited until both are settled.

  11. Find the will, and tell Service CanadaPaperwork

In the first weeks · at the same time as the step above · 0 of 4

The executor (in Quebec, the liquidator) named in the will leads what follows.

  12. Settle and divide the estatePaperwork

In the months after · 0 of 4

  13. Look after the family

Four months and ten days · 0 of 3

A woman keeps the prescribed mourning (iḥdād: setting aside adornment and perfume) for no more than three days for any death, except for her husband: then four months and ten days, the length of her ʿiddah, or until she gives birth if she is pregnant.
