Accessibility

Families often come here in the worst hours of their lives, on a phone, tired, sometimes with poor eyesight or in a second language. We want every page to work for them.

What we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

What we do

  • Pages are checked with automated accessibility testing (axe) at phone and desktop widths before they go live.
  • Everything can be used with a keyboard, and focus is always visible.
  • Text and controls meet contrast requirements in both the light and the dark theme, and the theme follows your device unless you choose.
  • Pages respect the reduced-motion setting, and nothing flashes.
  • Illustrations have text descriptions, or are marked as decoration when they add nothing to the words.
  • Arabic, Urdu and other languages are marked so screen readers pronounce them correctly, and right-to-left pages are laid out right to left.
  • The step-by-step guides can be printed in full, and the main guides are available as PDFs.

Known limits

  • The maps on directory pages are visual. Every listing on a map is also given as text, with its address and phone number.
  • The PDFs are made from the web pages and may be less easy to use with a screen reader than the pages themselves.
  • The talks on the talks page are played by YouTube. Captions depend on each video; most have YouTube’s automatic captions, which can contain errors. We have not added our own transcripts.
  • The site has not yet been audited by an independent accessibility tester.
