إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in District of Columbia
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- The funeral director who first takes custody of the body submits the report of death to the Registrar electronically within five days after the death and before final disposition, and must tell the Registrar why if it will be late. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. D.C. Code § 7-231.12
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates come from DC Health, Vital Records Division, online, by phone, by mail or in person. Only a spouse or domestic partner, parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, legal representatives and people with a documented legal need can order, so ask the funeral home how many copies to get. - Objecting to an autopsy
- The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner must investigate certain deaths, including violent, sudden, unexplained or suspicious ones and deaths of people whose bodies are to be cremated. We found no provision in that law that lets a family refuse an autopsy on religious grounds, so contact the office early and state your objection. D.C. Code § 5-1405
- Small estates
- Sixty days after a death, a successor can collect a small asset by affidavit if the whole probate estate, after liens, exceeds the known debts but is no more than $40,000, includes no real property, funeral expenses are paid, and no personal representative has been appointed. Ask the Probate Division of DC Superior Court if you are unsure it fits. D.C. Code § 20-361
