إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Illinois
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- The funeral director who first takes custody of the body files the death certificate with the local registrar within seven days after the death, and the state has an electronic reporting system for it. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. 410 ILCS 535/18
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates are issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Vital Records; only people with a personal or property interest can order one, and you will need a government photo ID. Ask the funeral home how to get copies, since state processing can take around 12 weeks. IDPH, Death Records
- Embalming and refrigeration
- Under the Funeral Directors and Embalmers Licensing Code, a funeral home that has held a body more than 48 hours without instructions from the person arranging the funeral must either embalm or refrigerate it, so refrigeration is an accepted choice. Give the funeral home clear written instructions early. 225 ILCS 41/15-75
- Small estates
- Illinois has a small estate affidavit for when no probate case is open: it can be used if the person's personal property passing by will or without a will is no more than $150,000, not counting motor vehicles registered with the Secretary of State. The affidavit must be notarized and has a death certificate attached; ask the circuit court clerk if you are unsure it fits your situation. 755 ILCS 5/25-1; Small Estate Affidavit form
From official Illinois sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
