When a Muslim dies in Indiana
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- In Indiana the doctor who last attended the person certifies the cause of death electronically, and the person in charge of interment (usually the funeral director) files the certificate with the local health officer through the state death registration system. The sections we read set no fixed number of days, so ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. Ind. Code 16-37-3-3, 16-37-3-5
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates come from the Indiana Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, or from the local health department in the county where the death happened. The funeral home can usually order copies for you, so ask how many you will need. Indiana Department of Health, Division of Vital Records
- Embalming and refrigeration
- Indiana does not require embalming; the law asks only that the body be buried or cremated within a reasonable time after death. If there will be a delay, ask the funeral home about refrigeration instead. Funeral Consumers Alliance, Indiana
- Objecting to an autopsy
- Indiana has no specific statute that lets a family refuse a coroner's autopsy on religious grounds; the coroner decides under the county coroner law. If you object for religious reasons, tell the coroner's office right away and ask in writing. Ind. Code 36-2-14-6
- Small estates
- If the person died after June 30, 2022 and the estate is worth $100,000 or less, an heir can use a small estate affidavit 45 days after the death instead of opening a full estate. Ask the clerk of the county circuit court for the form. Ind. Code 29-1-8-1
From official Indiana sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
