إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

When a Muslim dies in Kentucky

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What Kentucky law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director (or person acting as one) who first takes custody of the body files the death certificate using the Kentucky Electronic Death Registration System. The funeral director must present it for medical certification within five days of the death, so ask the funeral home to confirm progress. KRS 213.076
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics, Department for Public Health, in Frankfort. The funeral home can usually order copies for you, so ask how many you will need. Where to Write for Vital Records: Kentucky
Embalming and refrigeration
Kentucky has no law requiring embalming, according to the Funeral Consumers Alliance; weather and planning matter more than any legal deadline. If there will be a delay, ask the funeral home about refrigeration. Funeral Consumers Alliance, Kentucky
Objecting to an autopsy
We found no Kentucky statute that lets a family refuse a coroner's autopsy on religious grounds, and the coroner has authority to order one. Coroner offices report that they often accommodate religious requests, so tell the coroner right away. KRS Chapter 72
Small estates
Kentucky lets the court dispense with full administration when the surviving spouse's exemption (up to $30,000 in personal property) or preferred claims equal or exceed the probate assets. Ask the county clerk or District Court which form applies. KRS 395.455; KRS 391.030

From official Kentucky sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
