إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Nevada
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.
Find a number- Death certificate filing
- The funeral director or person acting as undertaker presents the completed death certificate to the local registrar within 72 hours after the death or its discovery. Ask the funeral home to confirm it has been filed. NRS 440.490
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates come from the Nevada Office of Vital Records in Carson City, or from the county recorder or health district; requests need a photo ID and proof of your connection to the person. The funeral home can usually order copies for you. Where to Write for Vital Records: Nevada
- Embalming and refrigeration
- Nevada law bars a funeral home, crematory or cemetery from requiring embalming before disposition, but a funeral home must embalm or refrigerate the body (at no more than 48 degrees F) within 24 hours of receiving it. You may delay refrigeration for up to eight consecutive hours for washing, prayer and similar family activity, so tell the funeral home your wishes. NRS 451.065; NAC 451.015
- Objecting to an autopsy
- We found no Nevada statute that lets a family refuse a coroner's autopsy on religious grounds. If you object for religious reasons, tell the coroner or medical examiner as early as you can. No specific statute found (NRS chapter 259)
- Small estates
- If the estate is $25,000 or less, with no real property in Nevada, an heir can use an affidavit of entitlement 40 days after the death; a surviving spouse has a higher limit. Ask the district court clerk for the form and the current limit. NRS 146.080
