When a Muslim dies in Pennsylvania

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What Pennsylvania law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director, or the person in charge of the burial, files the death certificate within four business days after the death, and it must be filed before a permit for burial or cremation is issued. If the funeral home reports the death electronically, certified copies can be ordered right away, so ask which way it is filing. 35 P.S. § 450.501; Death Report (Pennsylvania Department of Health)
Ordering death certificates
Certified copies of a Pennsylvania death certificate come from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, online, by mail, or at a Vital Records office. Close family members 18 or older can apply with ID, and the funeral home can also order copies for you. Death Certificates (Pennsylvania Department of Health)
Embalming and refrigeration
Pennsylvania lets the family choose: remains held more than 24 hours after death must be embalmed, sealed in a container that will not let fumes or odors escape, or kept under refrigeration, unless that conflicts with a religious belief or a medical examination. A funeral director may not embalm without written permission from the family or the person authorized to make arrangements. Tell the funeral home which option you want. 49 Pa. Code § 13.201 (and § 13.202 on written permission to embalm)
Small estates
Pennsylvania lets small estates worth $50,000 or less be settled by a petition to the Orphans' Court instead of full probate. Ask the Register of Wills in the county where the person lived about this petition. 20 Pa.C.S. § 3102; Pa. O.C. Rule 5.50 checklist
