إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156

When a Muslim dies in South Carolina

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What South Carolina law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director, or person acting as one, who first takes custody of the body files the death certificate electronically with the state Bureau of Vital Statistics within five days after the death. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. S.C. Code § 44-63-74
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from the South Carolina Department of Public Health, Office of Vital Records, which has records since January 1915; every request needs a photocopy of valid picture ID. Ask the funeral home how many certified copies you are likely to need before you order. Where to Write for Vital Records: South Carolina
Objecting to an autopsy
We found no South Carolina statute that lets a family refuse an autopsy on religious grounds. If a medical examiner or coroner is involved, tell that office about your religious objection as early as possible and ask what can be done. S.C. Code Title 17, chapter 5 (coroners)
Small estates
In South Carolina, a successor can collect personal property with an affidavit when the probate estate is $45,000 or less after liens, 30 days have passed since the death, and no personal representative has been requested. Ask the probate court in the county where the person lived for the affidavit. S.C. Code § 62-3-1201
