إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Utah
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- The custodial funeral service director (or, if none is hired, the person handling the disposition) signs and files the death certificate within five days after the death and before final disposition. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. Utah Code 26B-8-114
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates come from the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics, which has records since 1905; the person who died, a mother, father, sibling, grandparent or grandchild can request one. Ask the funeral home how many certified copies you are likely to need before you order. Where to Write for Vital Records: Utah
- Embalming and refrigeration
- Utah does not require embalming, but no body may be held or in transit more than 24 hours after death before final disposition unless it is kept at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder or embalmed by a licensed embalmer. Ask the funeral home how it will keep the body if the burial is more than a day away. Utah Admin. Code R436-8-4
- Small estates
- Utah lets heirs collect property with a small estate affidavit when the whole estate is under $100,000, there is no real property, at least 30 days have passed since the death, and no personal representative has been requested. Ask the Utah court's probate self-help center if you are unsure. Utah Code 75-3-1201
