A question families ask
How soon after death is a Muslim funeral?
As soon as possible. The Prophet ﷺ told us to hurry with the funeral, so families arrange the washing, the prayer and the burial as quickly as the paperwork allows. The janazah prayer is often held after one of the daily prayers, and the burial follows straight after.
Someone has just died?Call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.
In more detail
-
Hurry with the funeral
The Prophet ﷺ told us to hurry with the funeral. That is why the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial follow one another closely, often on the same day.
-
Call the masjid first
The masjid’s funeral committee arranges the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and agrees a time for the ghusl and the janazah prayer. They usually know which funeral home to use.
-
Tell the hospital early
In a hospital or hospice, tell the staff early that the family needs a quick release for a religious burial. Hospital guidance asks staff to be sensitive to this when they process the death certificate.
-
What can delay it
After a sudden, violent or unexplained death, the medical examiner or coroner may need to examine the body, and may order an autopsy. Some states let families object on religious grounds; ask the medical examiner’s office what applies in your state, and ask them to work quickly so burial is not delayed.
-
If the body is to travel
Bringing a body home from another country, or sending it to one, can take one to several weeks. Scholars differ on moving a body before burial; ask a scholar you trust.
