A question families ask
How do I get the body released quickly for a Muslim burial?
Tell the hospital or hospice staff early, before death if you can, that the family needs a quick release for a religious burial, and call the masjid’s funeral committee. In the US it is generally possible to file the death certificate with the cause of death listed as pending. If the medical examiner or coroner takes the case, release depends on that office, so ask it directly about timing.
Someone has just died?Call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

Say it early
Hospital guidance asks staff to be sensitive to the need for a quick burial when they process the death certificate, and Hospice UK calls such wishes time critical. Where the death is expected, ask the team to record the family’s wish for a quick release.

The death certificate
State law sets the time for completing and filing the death certificate. The doctor should deliver it to the funeral director promptly, and the cause can be filed as pending.
-
If the attending doctor is not there
In some places another doctor on duty may pronounce the death and, with the attending doctor’s permission, release the body to the funeral director. The funeral director still needs the cause of death from the attending doctor before filing.
-
If the medical examiner or coroner is involved
After a sudden, violent or unexplained death, the medical examiner or coroner may order an autopsy. Some states let families object on religious grounds; ask the office what applies in your state, and ask it to work quickly so burial is not delayed.
-
No embalming needed
Embalming is not required by law except in certain special cases, and a funeral home must not tell you it is needed for an immediate burial when refrigeration is available and state or local law does not require it.
