A question families ask
Who pays for a Muslim funeral if the family has no money?
The funeral is paid from the estate first, before debts and before anything is inherited; if the estate cannot cover it, family and the community step in. Ask your masjid whether it has a burial fund, and ask the social services office where the person lived about county or city burial help. Social Security, the VA and FEMA help only in particular cases.
Someone has just died?Call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.
In more detail
-
The estate first
Four rights attach to the estate in order: the funeral and burial, the debts, bequests from a third of what remains, then the heirs.
-
Masjid burial funds
Some masajid run funds that families join for a yearly fee, which then cover a member’s funeral. Ask your masjid whether it has one. Some masjid cemeteries are waqf land and give the grave free.
-
County and city help
There is no single national programme for families who cannot pay. Many counties and some states have a burial assistance programme; rules and amounts vary. As one example, New York City’s Human Resources Administration can pay up to $1,700 towards the funeral bill of a low-income New York City resident, if you apply within 120 days.

Social Security
A one-time payment of $255 can go to a qualifying spouse or child. Apply within 2 years of the death.

Veterans
The VA pays a burial allowance to whoever paid for a veteran’s burial and will not be reimbursed by any other organization, if the veteran was not dishonourably discharged and the death meets its conditions: up to $2,000 for a service-connected death on or after 11 September 2001, or, for a death not connected to service on or after 1 October 2026, up to $1,032 towards the burial and $1,032 for a plot.

FEMA, only after a declared disaster
