A question families ask

Is there a janazah for a Muslim who died by suicide?

Yes. A Muslim who took their own life is still a Muslim: they are washed, shrouded, prayed over and buried with the Muslims, as the four schools hold. In the Ḥanbalī school the imam of the community holds back from leading the prayer, but everyone else prays. Do not judge where they are; pray for them.

In more detail

  • What the schools say

Al-Nawawī: whoever killed himself is washed and prayed over; this is the Shāfiʿī school, and Abū Ḥanīfah and Mālik held the same. Aḥmad held that the imam of the community does not pray over him, and the rest of the people do.

Al-Nawawī, al-Majmūʿ (Shāfiʿī, with the other schools), 5:267

  • SchoolḤanafī

Whoever killed himself, even deliberately, is washed and prayed over, and the fatwā is given on this. Someone whose death was an accident is prayed over without any disagreement.

Ibn ʿĀbidīn, Radd al-Muḥtār (Ḥanafī), 2:211–212

  • SchoolḤanbalī

The imam does not pray over someone who deliberately killed himself, and everyone else does; Aḥmad stated this. Ibn Qudāmah explains that the Prophet ﷺ held back himself while others prayed, as he once held back from praying over a man who died in debt and told the people: pray over your companion. He also reports that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and al-Awzāʿī held that he is not prayed over at all, and that al-Shāfiʿī held that the imam and everyone pray over every Muslim.

Ibn Qudāmah, al-Mughnī (Ḥanbalī, with the other schools), 2:415–416

  • What the Prophet ﷺ did

A man who had killed himself with arrowheads was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he did not pray over him. In al-Nasāʾī’s wording he said: as for me, I will not pray over him.

  • Pray for them, and do not judge

A man who migrated with al-Ṭufayl ibn ʿAmr fell ill, cut his own finger joints and bled to death. Al-Ṭufayl saw him in a dream in a good state, forgiven, with only his hands wrapped. When he told the Prophet ﷺ, the Prophet ﷺ prayed: O Allah, forgive his hands too. Do not say for certain where anyone is; say “we hope”, and pray.

  • The medical examiner

After a sudden or violent death, the medical examiner or coroner may need to examine the body and may order an autopsy. Some states let families object on religious grounds; ask the office what applies in your state, and ask it to work quickly so burial is not delayed.
